What programming actually means

Since immobilisers became standard, a car will only run when it recognises the electronics inside the key. Programming is the process of introducing a new key to the vehicle so it is accepted. Without it, a perfectly cut key will turn the lock and go no further.

Transponder keys

A chip in the key head communicates with the vehicle at the ignition. New transponder keys are paired to the car so the immobiliser allows the engine to start.

Remote keys

Remote fobs handle central locking, unlocking and often the boot. The remote side and the transponder side both need setting up on a replacement.

Smart and proximity keys

Keyless vehicles detect the key nearby and start on a button. These take a bit more care and are supported on many, though not all, vehicles.

Replacement and spare keys
